How To Add Meta Descriptions To Your Blogger Blog And Posts

If you are a Blogger user, you can easily add meta description tags to each and every post/page of your blog. Meta descriptions are displayed as snippets in your blog's Google search results. Here is an easy-to-follow tutorial that will teach you how to enable meta descriptions and will also explain you the advantages of doing the same.

Matt Cutts (@mattcutts) is a Google employee, who works with the Search Quality team on search engine optimization issues. Here is a video of him explaining the importance of meta description tags.

Steps to implement:

1. Go to your blogger dashboard >> Settings >> Search Preferences.

2. You will see Meta Tags written on the top. Below that, besides Description, you will see something like:
 [Disabled] Edit
Click on Edit. You will be asked to "Enable search description?", choose Yes and write a short description (150 characters or less) of your blog in the box that appears.

3. Hit Save Changes. Congratulations! You have successfully added a meta description to your blog!

Once you have enabled search description, you have the option to add a search description to every post and every page of your blog. Follow these steps:

1. Go to your blogger dashboard >> Posts >> Hover your mouse over the post that you want to add a description to and click Edit. (You can do the same for pages)

2. On the right-hand side, there will be various options under the header Post settings. You will see an option called "Search Description" - Click on it >> enter the description of your post >> hit Done.

Benefits:

The blog search description will be displayed as a snippet in Google search results. The text that you entered will work as a description for your blog so that readers can know what your blog is about. Here's what Techsperia Blog looks like in Google search results:

Tip: To know how I displayed my picture in the above search result, visit Display Your Picture Besides Your Website/Blog's Google Search Results.

The post search description works the same way. Whatever you write in the search description will be displayed in Google search results as a description for your posts.

It's a good thing that Google gives us the freedom to choose what we want to display beneath our blog's search results. By adding meta descriptions, both Google and your readers will come to know what your content is really about!
